Don’t Just Lose Weight – Make Lifestyle Changes

LIFESTYLE refers to the relationships between a group of individuals in a shared environment. The concept was introduced by Austrian psychiatrist Alfred Adler in his influential article, The Case of Miss R. The term was later adopted by American sociologist William Bates in his widely-read volume, Human Relationships. LIFESTYLE is considered to be one of the most important concepts in any field of study about people’s lives.

The term LIFESTYLE had its origin in the field of psychology. According to Adler, the word LIFESTYLE actually stands for the primary needs of a child at the stage of development called infancy. In fact, the book The Case of Miss R sums it up in the very first paragraph: “The infant wants security, warmth, familiar surroundings, good care, self confidence, social interaction, the mastery of mother and family, socialization, the assurance that mother and home are safe”. The concept of LIFESTYLE then was to provide the most basic needs of a baby so that he could survive in the outside world. This was the most significant need which all human beings had, even before civilization came.

From the foregoing it can be seen that the word LIFESTYLE has various interpretations across the generations. It is used in much more diverse ways in North America than in Europe, where the term LIFESTYLE is primarily associated with alfred adler’s model of the family unit, i.e. a nuclear family with mother, father and children sharing their lives. Adler’s model of the family, in which mother plays the role of the head of the household, is what many people in North America call a LIFESTYLE.

In my own generation, LIFESTYLE was a term that was associated with social clubbing and a sense of accomplishment through peer pressure. By the time we were teenagers, the concept of the LIFESTYLE had been redefined by major social changes: the end of the war, the coming of television, the rise of the automobile and the changing styles of clothing. Our values shifted and our habits followed suit. Now, instead of a LIFESTYLE being a family activity, it was now associated with partying, drinking, frequent trips to the liquor store and a general lack of concern for one’s own health and well-being.

The problem is that these lifestyle changes lead not only to increased body fat but also a loss of self-confidence and motivation. This means that when you want to lose weight, you have to begin to change your habits. You can’t just say that you’re going to eat a slice of cake and have a few drinks after work, that’s not how it works.
